Data mining, online transactions and other new computing demands require collecting and processing enormous amounts of data. Still, IT departments are expected to keep up, even with budgets flat to down. Modular Computing can slash costs in IT infrastructure by enabling IT groups to consolidate equipment and conserve expensive real estate. It offers the opportunity to migrate applications from expensive proprietary platforms to more open, powerful and manageable systems.

Siebel partnered with SRS2 in collaboration with Oracle and several hardware vendors to test the viability of this approach in Siebel environments under real-world conditions. In benchmarks utilizing a single server, a two-node Oracle 10g RAC cluster and a four-node Oracle 10g RAC cluster, the results show that Oracle 10g RAC offers 80% scalability up to 4 nodes. A single medium-sized database node supported up to 2,500 users, a 2-node cluster supported 4,000 users, and a 4-node cluster supported 8,000 users (all servers at 75% CPU utilization), proving the viability of the scale-out approach. This paper discusses the details of this investigation carried out using Egenera BladeFrame servers and Network ApplianceTM Unified Storage.

The price/performance of the Intel/Linux platform makes a compelling argument to run mission critical applications like Database Servers, Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) applications. Sybase ASE on blade servers reduces the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) and gives the best Return On Investment (ROI).

Enterprise datacenters are filled with underutilized hardware platforms rigidly tied to specific applications-the direct result of a legacy computing architecture not designed for flexibility or responsiveness. This makes today's environment extremely complex, expensive and difficult to manage. This paper discusses the PAN architecture which abstracts server and network resources in the same way that the SAN virtualized storage resources.

To determine which technologies are game changers for the IT organization, financial modeling is critical. Unfortunately, first-generation Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) analysis fails to capture the true value or costs of a technology. A more expansive and inclusive technique must be used to capture all aspects of an infrastructure decision. Egenera has developed a model called the Application Provisioning Lifecycle (APL) that looks at all infrastructure, software and operational costs incurred as an application moves from development to QA to testing to production.

To dramatically lower datacenter costs and improve competitive advantage, IT organizations should start with an examination of the cost and competitive-advantage drivers in their current infrastructure. This paper examines several Global 1000 organizations, the similarities in their cost structures, and the leading causes of poor total cost of ownership (TCO) in the datacenter.

Over the past several years, the use of virtual machine (VM) or hypervisor technology has become widespread on industry-standard servers as the means to securely consolidate numerous applications on a single box. Looking into the future, we can anticipate that those hundreds of servers will become thousands of virtual machines. While this will deliver benefits in terms of better server utilization, management of this complexity will become a critical issue. Egenera's Processing Area Network (PAN) architecture combined with best-of-breed hypervisors offers the ideal foundation for a highly available, easily managed, scalable and highly utilized datacenter environment.

Over the past decade, the use of clustering has grown in response to the need for high performance computing, high availability and load balancing. Database applications, however, have historically been run on single servers, often requiring expensive, high-capacity SMP systems that represent a single point of failure. In response, Oracle has introduced 9i Real Application Clusters--a scalable, highly available database on SAN-connected Linux machines. This paper explores how the Egenera BladeFrame with its PAN architecture provides unique advantages for this exciting new Oracle application.

Oracle9i Real Application Clusters (RAC) deployed on the Egenera BladeFrame is a key component to lowering TCO for high-performance database systems. The Egenera BladeFrame and its Processing Area Network (PAN) architecture provide an unbeatable platform for Oracle9i Real Application Clusters. The physical features of the BladeFrame's hardware and the virtual advantages of its software provide a natural and optimized synergy with Oracle9i RAC. The resulting benefit is a significantly lower total cost of ownership (TCO) while providing for unbeatable scalability, availability, performance and manageability. Any IT organization looking to lower the TCO for high-performance database systems should investigate Oracle9i RAC running on the Egenera BladeFrame.

Traditionally, when IT is tasked with providing resources to new and existing applications, an application is treated as a single silo of hardware and software. The resources are sized to handle peak demands, configured for its specific needs and deployed. Grid computing moves away from these silos to a more horizontal approach. This allows businesses to add resources on demand to handle peak loads, resulting in better utilization of resources, service levels, and cost savings.

The competitive nature of the financial services market causes each and every company to constantly search for ways to improve competitive advantage. Algorithmics' Algo Suite deployed on the Egenera BladeFrame system can provide a competitive advantage to financial institutions through increases in performance, scalability, manageability and business agility and decreases in total cost of ownership (TCO). Benchmark tests of Algo Suite on the BladeFrame demonstrate performance increases of two to four times versus proprietary UNIX systems.

Building and maintaining server infrastructure is part of any disaster recovery (or continuous availability) plan. Traditional processing systems make this very complicated and expensive — the direct result of a legacy computing architecture not designed for flexibility or responsiveness. As a result, implementing DR with legacy computing architectures can require 2x the physical and management complexity.
The Processing Area Network (PAN) architecture eliminates the cost and complexity of implementing disaster recovery by enabling any application to run on any computing resource, at any time, automatically. The PAN simplifies DR processes (automated change control), lowers management costs (maintenance, testing, DR documentation), and increases the efficient use of DR resources. Changing the underlying architecture with a PAN can lower the capital and operational cost of implementing DR by up to 80%, while ensuring recovery in as little as 15 minutes with 100% success.
