Egenera Announces Plans to Support Solaris 10

—Extends Benefits of Egenera's Utility Computing Platform to Solaris Applications—

Marlboro, Mass.—November 15, 2004—Egenera Inc. and Sun Microsystems Inc. today announced that Egenera will add support for the SolarisTM 10 Operating System to the Egenera® BladeFrame® system in the second half of 2005. With this addition, the Egenera BladeFrame will dynamically and automatically deploy and redeploy the Solaris, Linux® and Microsoft® Windows® operating systems across servers in real time. Under the terms of the agreement, Egenera will resell both Solaris 10 running on the x86 platform and the Sun JavaTM Enterprise System.

Adding support for Solaris on Egenera's x86 system is in response to demand from customers, such as those on Wall Street and in other industries, who wish to run Solaris applications in the utility computing environment enabled by the Egenera BladeFrame. With 62 percent share of all units shipped, Sun leads the UNIX® server market (according to Gartner Q2CY04 Server Quarterly Statistics), enabling Egenera to bring its unique virtualization technology to a broader range of customers and applications, and increasing the company's already impressive market potential.

"Solaris is an important part of the environment at many firms," said Evan Bauer, former CTO for global technology infrastructure at Credit Suisse First Boston and principal research fellow at Robert Francis Group. "Having the opportunity to run Solaris applications on the Egenera BladeFrame provides a level of manageability and operational efficiency previously unavailable."

"Our world-class customers depend on Solaris for some of their most mission-critical applications," said Pete Manca, senior vice president of Engineering, Egenera. "By enabling datacenters to dynamically run multiple Linux distributions, Windows and soon Solaris on a single system, the Egenera BladeFrame simplifies infrastructure, increases utilization and lowers total cost of ownership. Through this alliance with Sun, we are pleased to bring our joint value proposition to mutual users, and we look forward to continued cooperation."

"Working with Egenera enables us to more effectively provide high-end x86 solutions to meet the growing demand for Solaris and the Java Enterprise System in the financial services and telecommunications markets," said John Loiacono, executive vice president of Software at Sun. "Combining the Egenera BladeFrame system's utility computing, virtualization and automation capabilities with the robust innovations in Solaris 10 for x86 platforms gives our current and potential joint customers a powerful platform for next-generation computing."

With today's announcement, the Egenera BladeFrame will provide the ability to run Red Hat® Linux, SUSE LINUX, Microsoft Windows Server 2003 and Solaris 10 simultaneously on a single system. By enabling customers to repurpose individual Egenera Processing BladeTM resources across operating systems, Egenera delivers utility computing today while providing the choice and flexibility to run an extensive range of business services.
