Company continues to innovate, meet customer demand for latest Intel-based blades
MARLBORO, Mass. — June 26, 2006 — Egenera Inc., a leader in datacenter virtualization architecture, today announced it will expand its line of Egenera® Processing BladeTM configurations with four new two-socket offerings incorporating the new Dual-Core Intel® Xeon® Processor 5100, formerly codenamed "Woodcrest" by Intel.
The newest Egenera pBladeTM modules will deliver the highest performance Intel architecture for Two-Socket Dual-Core processors, utilizing a 1333MHz front side bus and 667MHz fully buffered memory. The Dual-Core Intel® Xeon® Processor 5100 requires only 80W of power, delivering both energy efficiency and high performance, with as much as twice the performance of Single-Core Xeon processors and up to three times the power efficiency. The Egenera pBlade modules also support Intel Virtualization Technology (VT), which provides silicon-level support for CPU virtualization. With the new pBlades, Egenera customers will be able to more efficiently run "VT-enabled" virtualization software from leading vendors on pBlades based on Intel Xeon processors.
The new Egenera pBlades will be populated with two Intel EM64T Xeon processors at speeds of either 2.33GHz or 3.0GHz. Memory amounts will vary from 4GB to 16GB to allow customers flexibility in their configurations. Operating systems certified to run on these 1U pBlades include Microsoft® Windows® 2003, Red Hat® Enterprise Linux® 3 and 4, SuSE® Linux Enterprise Server 9, and Sun® SolarisTM 10.
Within the Egenera BladeFrame® system, Processing Blade modules provide the ideal platform to run mission-critical applications. These diskless resources enable automated allocation, repurposing and failover since any server can assume the identity of any other server. Moreover, Egenera virtualization technology transforms 80 percent of the I/O devices on a legacy server into software, delivering unparalleled flexibility and reliability. A single BladeFrame system can simultaneously run Processing Blades with various processor architectures and operating systems, enabling customers to automatically align computing resources to application requirements and scale performance dynamically.
"Egenera Processing Blade configurations based on the new Dual-Core Intel Xeon processors will deliver the superior energy efficiency and performance benefits that enterprise customers need to power their mission-critical applications," said Susan Davis, vice president, Egenera. "Our customers continue to embrace dual-core technology and we believe Intel's new processors offer significant enhancements around price, performance and efficiency. We are pleased to again be among the first to market with high-end Processing Blades based on Intel's new Dual-Core Xeon processors."
"Intel and Egenera both work continuously to develop leading-edge solutions for enterprise customers," said Boyd Davis, general manager, Server Platforms Group Marketing, Intel. "Egenera Processing Blades featuring the new Dual-Core Intel Xeon processor 5100 will represent a culmination in that effort to enable more efficiency, responsiveness and dependability. These leading-edge server platforms bring about industry leadership in performance, new advancements in memory, low power processing, I/O and reliability."
Egenera Processing Blades based on the Dual-Core Intel Xeon Processor 5100 will be commercially available later in Q3 of 2006.
