Cambridge Health Alliance Deploys Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 on Egenera BladeFrame System

— Server Consolidation and Scalability Lower Costs, Streamline Management —

Marlboro, Mass.—April 26, 2005—Egenera Inc., a global leader in utility computing, today announced that Cambridge Health Alliance (the Alliance) has expanded its use of the Egenera® BladeFrame® system to include Microsoft® Exchange Server 2003. By deploying Exchange on the BladeFrame, the Alliance has consolidated from four legacy Intel-based servers to one Egenera Processing Blade™ module while enabling scalability to 6,000 concurrent users.

Judy Klickstein, senior vice president of information technology and CIO at the Alliance, says that Exchange Server 2003 running on the BladeFrame offers the same level of reliability and performance the Egenera system brings to its clinical applications. “E-mail at the Alliance is a high-profile and mission-critical service,” she says. “It was imperative to identify a robust solution.”

The Alliance needed to ensure high availability and scalability — as well as handle its entire messaging environment — without impacting performance and without additional hardware.

“The BladeFrame is cutting-edge technology with integrated failover capabilities that we wanted for our messaging system,” said Dan Cameron, senior technical architect at the Alliance. “Combining Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 and the Egenera BladeFrame gives our users the messaging functionality they need while simplifying management. Server consolidation alone has yielded substantial savings in labor and administration. Now, the two IT staffers managing the e-mail system can focus on projects that improve IT services.”

Scalability has also been enhanced. The Alliance is currently running Exchange Server 2003 with mailboxes, public folders, Outlook Web access, message filtering, antispam software and antivirus technology on a single Egenera Processing Blade for 4,500 users. Testing supports 6,000 concurrent connections at a CPU utilization rate of 40 to 45 percent, demonstrating ample room for growth.
