Oracle
www.oracle.com

Oracle Corporation is one of the world's leading suppliers of software for information management. Egenera performed, completed and passed the Oracle9i, Oracle9i RAC, and 10g validation test on the BladeFrame using the Oracle Certification Environment (OCE) test kit. Oracle Application Server, Oracle Collaboration Suite and Oracle e-Business Application Suite have also been validated on the Bladeframe.

Oracle Real Application Clusters
The Egenera system's Processing Area Network (PAN) architecture, which features software-based resource management, automatic failover through a diskless Processing BladeTM design and network virtualization, provides an ideal platform to fully leverage the performance and scalability features of Oracle Real Application Clusters. Specifically, the BladeFrame brings the following advantages to an Oracle Real Application Cluster deployment:

  • Simplified clustering: Through software-based resource allocation, the BladeFrame enables a system administrator to add or remove virtual servers from a cluster on-the-fly, a process that is both time-consuming and disruptive with legacy platforms. Egenera PAN ManagerTM software replaces error-prone, physical activities with point-and-click or scripted commands to speed Oracle Real Application Clusters deployment, lower management costs and eliminate the need for complex clustering software.
  • High availability (HA): In the event of a failure, Oracle Real Application Clusters helps ensure that transaction processing continues by transferring the failed node's workload to another server in the cluster. The BladeFrame's inherent N+1 failover complements the HA capabilities of Oracle Real Application Clusters by automatically re-establishing a failed database instance on a backup resource. No user intervention is required, and throughput is restored in minutes.
  • Network virtualization: The BladeFrame system combines a very high-speed, low-latency interconnect (the Egenera BladePlaneTM) with super-efficient network drivers to speed data exchange among the virtual servers in a cluster. These ultra-fast connections mean notable performance improvements for the Oracle Real Application Clusters Cache Fusion architecture versus traditional networking with conventional servers.

Oracle Application Server
For large enterprises and service providers implementing a three-tier Internet infrastructure, the BladeFrame hardware architecture coupled with the scalable and reliable Oracle Application Server delivers unprecedented flexibility, including the ability to reallocate resources across tiers on-the-fly in response to changing load conditions. Likewise, combining the clustering functionality inherent to OracleAS with the BladeFrame's software-driven partitioning capabilities gives customers easy access to high availability configurations.

Oracle Application Server on the BladeFrame enables customers with enterprise-class data centers to run entire application stacks on a single, integrated platform, helping deliver all the advantages of server consolidation including efficiencies in system administration and total cost of ownership.

Powerllel
www.powerllel.com

Powerllel's unique technology dynamically splits an application at run-time to provide load-balancing for the best possible application performance (time to results). Powerllel's Lobster (Load Balancing Sub-Task ExecuteR) continually reassesses the environment using algorithms that will optimize performance at any given point in time.

Other methods of distributed processing pre-define how the application will be split, eliminating the ability to adjust, on-the-fly, to changes such as the number of available processors and I/O characteristics.

Lobster adds fault-tolerant capabilities-if any one processor fails, that piece of the application is automatically rerouted to one of the remaining processors. Without the dynamic nature of Lobster, that computation would need to start again, affecting speed, performance and accuracy of computations. Powerllel's technology can be used to eliminate the need for application developers to implement parallel processing tasks (such as fail-over, roll-back and load balancing) within the application, greatly reducing application development time. Powerllel Adapters are tailored to the structure of an application (linear vs. tree, for example) allowing an application to be integrated with Lobster in a matter of minutes (as compared to months) to implement parallel processing within the application.
