Q.
How is Egenera PAN Manager different than hypervisor-based virtualization (i.e., server virtualization)? |
| |
A.
Egenera provides technology that is complementary to server virtualization solutions, such as those from VMware and Citrix Systems.
However, Egenera's approach and value proposition is different. Hypervisors provide an effective means for consolidating hardware and increasing utilization on a single server, among other benefits.
PAN Manager software virtualizes beyond a single server, to allow customers to create and manage networks of both virtual and physical servers and their associated networking and storage infrastructure. Both virtual machines and physical servers are represented logically within a Processing Area Network (PAN). These computing assets are deployed and managed in exactly the same fashion, with both verifiable disaster recovery and high availability.
Egenera refers to this next phase of virtualization as "Data Center Virtualization" or what some industry analysts have begun to coin as "Virtualization 2.0.".

Q.
What is Egenera's new market opportunity with this strategy? |
| |
A.
PAN Manager's capabilities span the Infrastructure Virtualization and Management, Provisioning and Clustering/Availability software markets. According to industry analysts, total revenues from these markets was an estimated $3B in 2006 and is forecasted to grow to $6.7B over the next five years. This opportunity is additive to Egenera's current addressable opportunity within the worldwide server market. Based on Egenera's focus on Medium to Large Enterprises and the Public Sector, we estimate that our addressable market within the server market is over $25B. |
